Introduction

November, 1996 saw the first public access to some of the surviving records of servicemen and women who served in WW1. The Records are housed at the National Archives, Kew and London. The National Archives hold the greatest collection of official documents relating to Britain’s involvement in WW1. Over the years an increasing number of files have been made available for academic or genealogy research.

The National Archives of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland are excellent sources for documents relating to the War years of 1914-1918. Additional primary source documents can be found at the National War Museum in Edinburgh Castle and the University of Edinburgh's Archives and Special Collections.
