This virtual history archive project is the coming together of
educational institutions and community groups. The project was
conceived in 2009 by the Centre for the Study of The Two World Wars,
the University of Edinburgh, and is working in collaboration with
Edinburgh City Libraries, local historians and community groups.
The focus of the project is to tell the story of the people and institutions of
Edinburgh, Leith and the Lothians during the war years of 1914 to 1918.

Many institutions, organisations, companies and societies have opened up their archives for inclusion in the project. All, if not most of the stories are being told and illustrated for the first time. The picture that emerges is one of great spirit, determination and generosity being shown by people on the Home Front, supporting the needs of the men and women serving on the fighting fronts.
