People's Journal, 14th August 1914.

We hope to add to our understanding of how the First World War altered and shaped people, families, and communities.

By publishing articles over a four year period, we will add to our knowledge not only of events but also of attitudes. As the horrific realities began to sink in and the number of casualties began to increase, public opinion and individual perspectives changed.

A headline in The Buteman and West Coast Chronicle of 7th August 1914, only three day after the declaration of war reads, "As a result of the war, the price of food locally has increased considerably, though not so badly as in some places…"

Two weeks later the Argyll and the Isles People’s Journal (pictured) reported fighting. Our understanding of war was already changing.
